Hyundai, the car manufacturer, has introduced an innovative feature in their LONIQ 5 vehicle that allows its wheels to rotate up to 90 degrees, enabling the car to drive sideways, a concept known as “crab” driving. This technology was developed by Hyundai Mobis, the car parts production arm of Hyundai Motor Group, and was showcased on the electric Ioniq 5 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023.
Originally presented as a concept at CES 2018, this technology offers a novel approach to vehicle mobility. It permits the Ioniq 5 to move not only in the conventional forward and backward directions but also laterally and diagonally. This functionality is achieved through the integration of what Hyundai refers to as an “e-Corner module” or “e-Corner system.” This system essentially combines steering, braking, suspension, and drive components into each wheel, allowing them to rotate up to 90 degrees, thereby enabling sideways movement.
The e-Corner module consists of independent electric motors for each wheel, coupled with a newly designed suspension system that grants the driver the ability to control each wheel’s steering independently. A video demonstration released by Hyundai Mobis displays the Ioniq 5 performing maneuvers like diagonal movement and spinning on the spot, all while maintaining the position of the front two wheels.
This cutting-edge technology isn’t limited to the Ioniq 5 alone; Hyundai Mobis showcased it on a concept vehicle at CES 2023 as well. The company claims that this innovation will have practical applications, such as facilitating parallel parking and enabling more agile direction changes. Particularly useful in crowded urban environments, the e-Corner system’s ability to achieve 90-degree wheel rotation can greatly enhance a vehicle’s maneuverability on narrow city streets.
Hyundai Mobis envisions integrating the e-Corner module into commercial car production as early as 2025. The technology’s potential impact on urban driving and mobility is noteworthy, and it aligns with Hyundai’s push toward innovative solutions for modern transportation challenges.
CES 2023, held in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8, 2023, featured numerous automotive advancements from various companies. BMW, a prominent automaker, presented an updated version of its color-changing car technology. They showcased a concept car capable of transitioning between 32 different colors. Meanwhile, Sony and Honda joined forces to unveil an electric car prototype designed as a “moving entertainment space.”
As technology continues to transform the automotive landscape, CES remains a platform for unveiling groundbreaking innovations and solutions in the world of transportation.
According to updated information from KKP site, the starting price for this car in 2024 is 41,800 USD.
